Kolam Charitable Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit organization started in May 2005 in Kauai, Hawaii by a few retired women. The goal is to help women, children and men in third world countries achieve economic independence. To do this, the organization raises funds in Kauai as well as on the mainland, mostly through Indian cooking classes and lunches. It donates 100% of its collections to the poor. Kolam focuses its work in Tamil Nadu in southern India. To date, the foundation has bought goats, cows and sewing machines for the women in the villages. In addition, the foundation has had a large role in aiding the local Imayam High School. It's helped students at Imayam finish high school and possibly pursue further educational opportunities. Kolam has also donated funds that have helped enrich education in arts and health, bharatha natyam dance, traditional karnatic music, tabla and gymnastics. Women for the World has sponsored two Indian children, providing tuition, school uniforms, books and lunches for an entire year.
